Please keep in your prayers Marie Long, who faithfully served the SJCAA for many years. Marie recently fell and, after being hospitalized, she was placed in a rehab center. Last week Marie was transferred to York Hospital with a clot in her artery. Her family has asked for our prayers. Thank you!

Please pray for my son in law, Jerry Lewandowski. He has a rare appendiceal cancer. He and my daughter, Karolyn, are expecting our first grandchild in July. He is having surgery today at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.

Jerry has a Caring Bridge website: <a href="http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jerrylew" rel="nofollow">http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jerrylew</a>

Between 1970 and 1972, I was a member of the Manhattan College Orchestra. Somewhere between March and April of 1972, St. Joseph's College was host to a concert that included the combined voices of the St. Joseph's College chorus, the Manhattan College glee club, and the Emmitsburg community chorus. We performed a piece written by Dr. Howard Hanson, Song of Democracy. I have vivid and fond recollections of the concert and our stay at Emmitsburg. Most of all, it was at that concert that formed my lifelong love for the work of Dr. Howard Hanson and music for the symphonic band.

I was deeply saddened when I found that St. Joseph's closed in 1973, but I am delighted that I found this website and the strong SJC alumnae community.

Shorts? Pants? AFTER my time! Between 1946 and 1950, we wore skirts (with sweaters or blazers, and stockings always) except on Wednesday nights when we dressed for dinner. Meals were served by uniformed staff at round tables (for six) covered by white tablecloths. The college kitchen baked its own bread and every freshman quickly gained weight which she tried to counteract with a rubber girdle (yes, a rubber girdle! Made by Rubbermaid?)... When we left the campus on the rare weekends we were permitted to do so, and on vacations, we wore suits, hats and gloves. We returned to campus the same way!. For the Junior Prom, the sisters inspected our gowns, requiring us to model them a week or so before the dance ( so we would have time to acquire a substitute gown if the modeled one were found wanting.) It may have been a myth that one student was instructed to wear a bureau scarf
around her shoulders to cover an unacceptable expanse of skin.... We washed and ironed personal laundry in large set tubs in basement laundry rooms in Seton and Marillac. Automatic washers were installed in Marillac in 1949. When one of those malfunctioned, the drain was found blocked by a pair of briefs. Venerable and ancient Sister Editha, in charge of the laundry room
at the time, exclaimed when she saw the briefs, "If the saints had to wear sackcloth and ashes to get into heaven, I don't know what you girls are
going to do!"

What a great get-together....we all had fun, talked a lot, cooked, ate, walked, kayaked, biked, watched the sun set over the gulf and just enjoyed each other's company. Bud Gillespie shared his newly developed talent of watercolors art work with us and Jim Phillips has become a wine maker, sharing his bubbly with us. We looked at pictures and reminisced. Loved every moment! Always hard to say goodby at week's end.

Memories of dress include no Bermuda shorts, they were very much in
style, and of course no pants, maybe for snow, probably not. If we were doing a production that included a man he/she had to wear a long coat to hide the lack of pants.
To get a tan before leaving for the summer required some sneakiness , a bathing suit under a dress and a walk to the creek carrying a ? towel. OK a redness appears at dinner with a nun suspiciously looking at the lobster colored skin - never a question asked. I think the nuns thought maybe a farm worker might see the suit or maybe a 'Mountie' might be around. It was such fun getting away with whatever!
The best stories were in dating and the good night kiss in front of the Angel Gabriel statue with the spotlights all beaming down on the couples. And then a nun walking between or classmate in nun's garb playing a prank - such fun and games!!
