I met David Carlton (MSM '72) parents weekend my freshman year. We started dating shortly after. After Joes closed I tried another college and after 1 semester I left. In 1973 we married. Subsequently we had two girls. I eventually completed my degree while working with the help of David and the girls (they did housework while I studied).

We now have 5 grandchildren between 5 and 14 years old who have us wrapped around their fingers. We just celebrated our 38th anniversary.

I had to go to Maryland to find a perfect partner that lived 20 miles from my home in Massachusetts.

I met Al Hahn MSM '72 in September of 1970 and we were together ever after that until he passed away October 14, 2009. We had 35 wonderful years of married life and four beautiful children. We often went back to Emmitsburg, and Al helped for many years to chaperone my 8th grade students on our annual Retreat to the Grotto and Seton Shrine. Al went on to become the school board president at our parish school, be the Boy Scout committee chairman, and coordinate the school basketball progam, among other things. Family was his life. They were very special times. We miss him a lot, but cherish the memories of our years together.

Harry Henderson and I met at the first mixer freshman year, which made us the first MSM-SJC couple for the class of '72. I remember that he bumped into me on the dance floor, looked down (his 6'4" to my 5'3"), and said, "Well, as long as you're here, do you want to dance?" I say he was clumsy. He said he swept me off my feet. I guess he did.

We used to go on long walks on campus - no car - and he would pull out a white handkerchief and put it on the bench for me to sit on, so my clothes wouldn't get dirty. I'd never met such a gentleman before, and I was smitten.

Now I wish I knew my classmates better, but at the time, I spent every possible hour with my sweetheart, barely leaving enough time for studies and my job on campus. My dorm mates in Marillac may remember yelling at me for monopolizing the pay phone. Harry and I could talk for an hour even when we'd just said goodnight outside.

We married after sophomore year and I enjoyed visiting my friends on campus with our baby Kathy in the stroller. Harry graduated from the Mount in '72 and spent the next seven years in the Air Force, where he got his Master's degree on the GI Bill. Our four children are 29 to 39 years old now, and I am blessed with seven grandchildren from one to eight years old. By the way, after putting two kids through college and two through trade school, Harry supported my wish to return to school. I got my BA in 2005 in Literature and Creative Writing (a far cry from nursing), and was darn proud of that accomplishment.

Harry spent the last 17 years working for IBM, and fought non-Hodgkins lymphoma off and on for 11 years, and then prostate cancer. We renewed our vows at the end of May 2010 for our 40th wedding anniversary, knowing that he now had a very aggressive plasma cancer. He went into renal failure, and died on July 18th.

We had a wonderful 42 years together. Thank God for that clumsy gesture at the first mixer in September of 1968.

Wonderful times with mounties, meeting at Tom's creek whisking off in his car to the mountains for the day. Going to the Gettysburg Battlefield to party, yes we did party back then. I always thought the big line up for good night kisses was hysterical. Talk about public demonstration of affection. Loved all the mounties dating my classmates, wonderful Bill, partner of my friend Bunny. Lois 's great guy, Deede Baril's Louis, and many more, good people , good friends.

Memories of dress include no Bermuda shorts, they were very much in
style, and of course no pants, maybe for snow, probably not. If we were doing a production that included a man he/she had to wear a long coat to hide the lack of pants.
To get a tan before leaving for the summer required some sneakiness , a bathing suit under a dress and a walk to the creek carrying a ? towel. OK a redness appears at dinner with a nun suspiciously looking at the lobster colored skin - never a question asked. I think the nuns thought maybe a farm worker might see the suit or maybe a 'Mountie' might be around. It was such fun getting away with whatever!
The best stories were in dating and the good night kiss in front of the Angel Gabriel statue with the spotlights all beaming down on the couples. And then a nun walking between or classmate in nun's garb playing a prank - such fun and games!!

It would be hard not to have special memories of the Mount and all that they added to our lives at SJC. How can we forget Friday night mixers and the boys standing on one side of the room (it was the cafeteria wasn't it?) and the girls on the other...and the strong smell of onions. I think a lot of us thought it was intentional to load up the onions on the boys dinners to keep us all from getting too up close and personal !?! And we had our songs about them which helped all our jilted hearts feel better, but after the song was over we'd be plotting the best way to get to see another Mountie.

We all must have all been in pretty good shape for the many walks into town to go to Charlie's and see who from the Mount might be there or who of them might drive by. Do you think the good Sisters put a pool table in our Student Center to encourage the boys to "drop" by??

I didn't marry a Mountie, had hoped at one point that might happen - well maybe at a number of points when I was getting really nervous that marriage was not in my future - but it was always great to hear about the SJC and MSM matches. And don't you think the good Fathers and Sisters were patting themselves on the back for helping to create the possibilities for those matches to happen?!

My husband, Ray Purkis, was the class of 1963 at the Mount. We met in Charlies (where else) and were married January 16, 1965. We have 3 children who graduated from Mount St. Marys. Both Ray and I enjoy attending each others reunions.

Well, for my birthday in April of senior year , Connie Mauro '70 gave me a blind date with a Mountie, the last thing I wanted. It was for Spring Week-end, and I did want to see the Jefferson Airplane. He was Dick Rasmussen MSM '71, cross country champion; it was love at first sight. We've been married for 37 years. Thanks again, Connie.
